STEM@SVSU Continued Engagement with the Community

Building a sustainable community outreach and impact network includes many inherent challenges. From securing site facilities and volunteers, to promotion and funding, STEM@SVSU has worked hard to reach out and harness the momentum and engage existing organizations as partners in bringing high-quality STEM experiences and opportunities to the Great Lakes Bay Region. This year, we would like to highlight some of the programs that demonstrate community engagement and opportunities for a sustained presence in our community.

Chief Science Officers:

In its fifth year in the Great Lakes Bay Region, the Chief Science Officers (CSO) Program continues to link students in local school districts with opportunities to explore and develop STEM connections with local businesses and organizations. This year, the CSOs visited both MDOT and Dow, learning about their perspective industries and their impact on our lives and economy. Not only do these experiences foster relationships between students and industry leaders, but they spark ideas for STEM action plans which are implemented by the CSOs in their local schools and communities.

First Ward Community Center:

New this year is an exciting partnership between STEM@SVSU and the First Ward Community Center, a well-established educational and social-welfare institution committed to serving the youth and families on Saginaw’s East Side. Working together, these organizations will bring several hands-on, high-interest STEM camps to elementary students in that community. This is just one example of the way STEM@SVSU is reaching out beyond the campus boundaries to connect with the community and provide learning opportunities for our urban areas.

MiSTEM – STEM Stars:

Continuing our efforts to recognize local STEM leaders in our school systems, STEM@SVSU and the MiSTEM East Central Michigan Region will recognize 20 teachers who demonstrate commitment, engagement, creativity, and enthusiasm in educating our youth in the various STEM disciplines. We believe that this award showcases not only the talent in our local communities, but the connections that can be made between K-12 schools, higher education, and local businesses and industry.

SMEKplus Jr./Sr. Summer Camp:

Back by popular demand, SVSU is proud to present the Science and Mathematics Extravaganza for Kids (SMEKplus); these two summer camps, SMEK Jr. (grades 2-4) and SMEK Sr. (grades 5-8), provide a 3-day opportunity for students to participate in fun-filled STEM activities centered around the scientific method and engineering design process. Dates and more information can be found on the STEM@SVSU website.

The above mentioned programs are just a sample of the many partnerships that STEM@SVSU continues to cultivate and pursue. It is our continued mission to connect youth in the Great Lakes Bay Region with quality STEM experiences and opportunities.
