Cal Poly’s STEM Education Conference

Overview

An Invitation to
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education

STEM Education Conference
Hosted by Cal Poly Pomona
and funded by the U.S. Department of Education (CCRAA)
Saturday, August 14, 2010
9:00am to 4:00 pm at the University Library

Twenty-six years ago this was the headline report that shook America.

“Our Nation is at risk. Our once unchallenged preeminence in commerce, industry, science, and technological innovation is being overtaken by competitors throughout the world.” (April 1983)

Seventeen years later in a report “Before It’s Too Late” (2000) we were reminded,

“In an age now driven by the relentless necessity of scientific and technological advance, the current preparation that students in the United States receive in mathematics and science is, in a word, unacceptable.”

Today, Twenty-five years later in a new report “Rising Above The Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future 2005” we are urged to act :

“The danger exists that Americans may not know enough about science, technology, or mathematics to significantly contribute to, or fully benefit from, the knowledge-based society that is taking shape around us. Moreover, most of us do not have enough understanding of the importance of those skills to encourage our children to study those subjects—both for their career opportunities and for their general benefit.”

Last year The U.S. Department of Education provided Cal Poly Pomona with a grant to help the university address the national shortage of professionals ready to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This funding was made available through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA) of 2007, which has been said to provide the single largest increase in college aid since the GI bill.

This two-year grant is helping Cal Poly Pomona build a STEM Pipeline to make the journey as smooth as possible for high school students to earn a degree and enter the workforce, particularly in the STEM disciplines.

Part of this effort involves Building a Formal STEM Faculty Learning Community. Best practices in teaching and learning in the STEM disciplines are the center of our learning community made up of STEM educators from Cal Poly Pomona, schools and teachers, and community partners.

This community began with Summer Institutes for Teachers, and now our first annual conference will bring all of the entities together to share best practices in teaching and learning in the STEM disciplines.
