Students who actively engage with peers, faculty, and with the scientific process
are more likely to remain in school, to graduate within the STEM disciplines, to
pursue advanced degrees, and to have successful STEM careers (Nagda et al. 1998).
The program, which will run throughout the academic year as well as during the summer,
will involve students as research apprentices and faculty mentors from across the
STEM disciplines.
Students who are accepted to this competitive program and who demonstrate quarterly
progress will receive compensation of $1,350 per quarter during the academic year
and $4,000 for ten weeks of full-time work during the summer. Students may also
earn up to six units of credit through concurrent enrollment in upper division special
topics or independent research courses. Some travel funding is also available. Host
laboratories will receive $800 per academic year and per summer to cover the cost
of supplies. Participants in the Research Apprentice Program will also benefit by
having:
- Increased confidence in their ability to design experiments
- Enhanced quantitative, technological, and communication skills through extended
practice
- An appreciation of the similarities and differences between the various STEM disciplines
- A feeling of inclusion as part of a larger research community
Application for the Summer 2010 funding period is now open.
